There are an absurd amount of articles, blogs, and what-not with people talking about balance. Work-life balance. Emotional balance. Physical balance (or imbalances, really). You name it, it’s out there.
So, here I am adding yet another piece about the so-called ‘balanced life’ (and a yoga video! Be sure to subscribe! #shamelessplug). And this is why I’m putting this out here – balance is personal. Balance is uniquely up to you. There are definitely some people’s opinions about balance that I simply don’t agree with (and I read a lot about balance and living the life you’re looking for), but some that resonated well with me.
One of the biggest takeaways I’ve learned is that balance is a state of mind. Which is why it’s unique to each person and to each moment. Which means if you need to push hard for something important, you do it. Then when you need to back off more than normal, you give yourself that space.

This is where you tune into what you need. What you actually need, not just ‘I need a bath, because life is hard’ kind of balance. Baths are great and all, but that’s not the only thing that brings balance.
For me, i focus on two things when I need to ‘counter-balance’ – physical and emotional balance. Hence why I made a yoga video for balance. 🙂
Below are SIMPLE ways to work on bringing in a bit more balance, physically and emotionally.
Physically
Find your foundation. Wherever you are, focus on rooting down. This may be your feet or your sitz bones (or hands if you’re feeling funky), so simply bring awareness into where you are.
As always, breathe deeply! Breathe fully from the bottom of the belly, through the rib change, into the chest and through the throat. This literally takes a minute, and it can be done anywhere, so if you’re not feeling grounded (i.e. unbalanced), pause, and take three deep and full breaths to recenter.
Emotionally
Whenever I’m feeling drained, I focus on ONE thing that always makes me happy. Just one thing. It can be big, or small – it should probably be small if you’re feeling uber stressed. 😉 Something easy to give yourself even the smallest mental break.
My go-to’s include:
- Doing a bit of yoga
- Taking a walk
- Turning my phone off
- Getting organized
